- Biographical / historical:
-
Born in Saratoga, Wyoming, Philip A. Munz (1892-1974) was an American botanist, educator, administrator, and author. Although he was trained as an entomologist, Munz learned botany while teaching at Pomona College in Claremont, California beginning in 1917. After a short stint as professor of botany at Cornell University, Munz returned to Southern California to become director of Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden (California Botanic Garden) in 1946, where he remained until his retirement in 1960. In addition to publishing monographs on Onagraceae and Delphinium, Munz was the author of A Manual of Southern California Botany (1935), A California Flora (1963), A Flora of Southern California (1974), and four popular plant guides for general readers known as the California Wildflower Books.
