Scope and content:

Folder includes handwritten letter describing the disaster (9 leaves), written by San Francisco resident Adah L. Higgins to uncle Frank Johnson a few days after the April 18 earthquake and subsequent fires. Fleeing the fires, Adah and husband John C. Higgins, manager at Great Western Smelting Co., are given refuge with the family of August Jacquemet, florist, at 1401 Woolsey St. in the southeast of the city. Folder also includes a transcript of the account (7 leaves), a two-page biographical sketch written by descendant Robert Hessong, and photocopies of portraits of Higgins and of San Francisco postcards formerly in Adah's possession (9 leaves.)

Biographical / historical:

Adah P. Lowe was born in Indiana and married John C. Higgins in Marion County in 1888. John worked as an iron moulder. The couple moved to San Francisco, where he worked for the Standard Brass Casting Co. and Great Western Smelting Co. After the 1906 earthquake and fire, the couple moved to Alhambra, Los Angeles County.
