Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of surfing memorabilia, photographs, and business records from surfer, surfboard shaper, and Hollywood surfing technical consultant and writer Phil Sauers (1937-2022). The collection documents Sauers' professional activities as a surfing technical consultant and surfboard producer for the films Ride the Wild Surf (1964) and The Surfers (1965), as well as for the television show Gidget (1965).

The materials date from 1963 to 1965, and include stickers, two magazines, proof sheets, film production records, and two small color slides of Barbara Eden on set in Hawaii during the filming of Ride the Wild Surf. Included among the photographs are black-and-white 8x11 inch prints of Sauers surfing.

Business records include invoices for surfboards shaped by Sauers (Surfboards by Phil) for use in Gidget and other productions, corrrespondence between Sauers (Phil Enterprises) and Columbia Studios, Filmways TV Productions Inc., and photographer Tom Keck.
