Background

Scope and content:

Correspondence primarily addressed to E.W. Wright, agent, in Astoria, Oregon. There is additional correspondence addressed to John Bell in San Jose, California. Some of the correspondence is concerning the movements of Chinese passengers from Hong Kong to Astoria, Oregon.

The correspondence refers to the "Empress of Japan" steam ship. The 'Empress of Japan', also known as 'The Queen of the Pacific', was a Canadian Pacific Railroad (CPR) Steamship that travelled from Vancouver to Asia more than 300 times.

Biographical / historical:

The Canadian Pacific Railway (French: Chemin de fer Canadien Pacifique) (reporting marks CP, CPAA, MILW, SOO), also known simply as CPR or Canadian Pacific and formerly as CP Rail (1968–1996), is a Canadian Class I railway incorporated in 1881. The railway is owned by Canadian Pacific Kansas City Limited, known until 2023 as Canadian Pacific Railway Limited, which began operations as legal owner in a corporate restructuring in 2001.
