Background

Scope and content:

The collection contains postcards, photographs, correspondence, wine labels, clippings, brochures, booklets, ephemera, and realia relating to wineries, figures in the wine industry, wine regions, and wine sellers in California. The photographs and postcards contain images of historic wineries in Southern California, including the Virginia Dare Winery (Garrett & Company) in Rancho Cucamonga and the Italian Vineyard Company in Guasti.

The correspondence is from Secondo Guasti, the founder of the Italian Vineyard Company, and between vintner Jean Louis Sainsevain and the United States Treasury Department relating to a tax matter concerning Sainsevain. Jean Louis Sainsevain was the nephew of early Los Angeles winemaker Jean-Louis Vignes and the co-owner of the 19th century Los Angeles winery El Aliso vineyard, which Sainsevain and his cousin bought from Vignes.

The collection also contains envelopes imprinted with the names of E.C. Bichowsky, Viticultural Commissioner for the Los Angeles District in the late 19th century and J. DeBarth Shorb, Viticultural Commissioner for California in the late 19th century.
