Background

Scope and content:

The collection consist of hundreds of photographs documenting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual and ally (LGBTQIA) history and culture, 1925-2007. The collection also includes personal, professional, candid, and posed photographs of buildings, businesses, demonstrations, events, monuments, organizations, people, and protests primarily from the early 1970s through the early 2000s.

Biographical / historical:

The bulk of the collection consists of the photographs Jim Kepner collected documenting the diversity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual and ally (LGBTQIA) history and culture. Kepner recruited volunteers to sort, organize, and file the photographs. After the merger of the International Gay and Lesbian Archives and ONE Incorporated in 1994, volunteers continued to collect and organize photographs. As the volunteers gained a greater understanding of archival principles and a professional staff was hired, an effort was made to reconstitute archival collections and records.
