Biographical / historical:

Joseph Abraham Gottlieb, later changed to Joey Bishop, was born February 3, 1918 (some sources say 1919) in Bronx, New York. Bishop established himself as a nightclub comedian by the early 1950s, and was nicknamed The Frown Prince of Comedy for his cynical demeanor. It was during this time that he caught the attention of Frank Sinatra, who hired him as his opening act. Bishop started his television career performing standup comedy on the Cavalcade of Stars. He regularly appeared on the game show Keep Talking, and as a guest host for Jack Paar and Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show. In the 1960s, Bishop earned a spot in the Rat Pack, a group of entertainers comprising Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Peter Lawford, who performed live in Las Vegas, Miami, Atlantic City, and Palm Springs.

Bishop starred in his own situation comedy, The Joey Bishop Show (1961-1965), which depicted Bishop as a late night talk show host and comedian. From 1967 to 1969, Bishop hosted his own late night talk show, The Joey Bishop Show. Bishop made his first motion picture appearance in The Deep Six in 1958. His additional film credits include Some Came Running (1959), Ocean's Eleven (1960), Valley of the Dolls (1967), and The Delta Force (1986), and others. During the 1970s Bishop continued to appear on a variety of television programs including The Hollywood Squares, The Dean Martin Show, The Don Rickles Show, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, and Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In, among others. In 1981 he performed on Broadway in Sugar Babies. Joey Bishop died October 17, 2007 in Newport Beach, California.
