Biographical / historical:

The Middle Eastern Student Center (MESC) was established in 2013, after a group of 14 students developed a proposal and worked with campus administration to create a space to provide support services for all students including those with ties to the Southwest Asia/Middle East and North Africa. The center, the first of its kind in the nation, has been involved in a number of initiatives and developments on campus to improve the student experience, including changing the UC application to include "Middle Eastern" as a self-identification choice, introducing halal meat as a campus dining option, establishing a Middle Eastern themed hall (Markaz), and helping organize the largest conference held at UCR with MSA West 2017.
