Background

Scope and content:

The collection consists of research files related to motion picture historian Harold Leonard. Included are bibliographic citations, clippings, press releases, a small amount of publicity ephemera and photographs, and occasional publications. The files document individuals and topics that deal mainly with critical and historical aspects of motion pictures. Some of the research may have been source material for the second volume of The Film Index: A Bibliography. Also included is a small amount information related to television.

Biographical / historical:

There is very little biographical information available about Harold Leonard. He graduated from Harvard with a M.A. and worked for the Warner Brothers story department in New York and Hollywood. In 1936, he submitted an idea to create The Film Index to the Works Progress Administration. The project was put into operation in May, 1936. Leonard along with fellow associate editor Sonia Volochova both saw all three volumes of The Film Index: A Bibliography through to publication. He was a correspondent for the British film quarterly Sight and Sound and contributor to many American periodicals. Leonard moved to Los Angeles where he continued to write and became a member of the UCLA Theater Arts faculty, teaching film history. He died of cancer November 10, 1956 at the age of 47.
