Background

Scope and content:

Record Series 549 contains administrative files generated by the Bio-technology Laboratory at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Engineering and Applied Science. Files include administrative, academic, and research materials. Administrative files include general administrative materials pertaining to the operation of the School of Engineering and Applied Science and Biotechnology Laboratory, as well as catalogs and promotional materials of relevant technology suppliers. Academic files document courses offered within the school, the Engineering Executive Program, and Masters degrees. Research files include organizational material, data, and results of research conducted at the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and within the Biotechnology Laboratory, including information about research projects, publications generated, and conferences attended, as well as reference files. Research files primarily concern work done on the field of prosthetics.

This is an inactive record series; no additional University records are expected to be added.

Biographical / historical:

Founding dean Llewellyn M.K. Boelter (1898-1966) organized the College of Engineering on the Los Angeles campus beginning in 1944, and led the college until his retirement in the summer of 1965. The formation of the College grew out of the University's wartime training program in engineering science and management. Dean Boelter adopted a new concept in engineering education by establishing a single undergraduate curriculum, with an emphasis on the fundamentals common to all engineers.

In 1968 the College of Engineering was renamed the School of Engineering, and was later renamed again in 2000 as the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, after a generous donation was given to the school by UCLA professor and alumnus, Henry Samueli and his wife, Susan.

The UCLA Biotechnology Laboratory was established in 1951. Professor John Lyman served as head of the unit from 1958-1980. In 1981, the unit was succeeded by the Human-Machine-Environment Engineering Laboratory, also directed by Professor Lyman. Although research conducted at the Biotechnology Laboratory extended in many directions, much research focused on the development of prosthetics.
