The collection contains a field notebook, watercolors, drawings, and proofs related to Lardner Vanuxem's work for the New York State Geological Survey and his 1842 publication, Geology of New York, Third District.
- Biographical / historical:

Lardner Vanuxem (1792-1848), an American geologist, graduated from the Γcole des Mines, Paris, in 1819. He was Chair of Chemistry and Mineralogy at South Carolina College until 1827, when he resigned to focus on his geological studies. He began to work for the Geological Survey of New York upon its institution in 1836. A member of the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Science, he also helped form the Association of American Geologists and Naturalists in 1840, which became the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1847.
