Scope and content:

This collection contains one letter written by Frank J. Guscetti to his brother Louis A. Guscetti from Manila, Philippines after participating in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War.

Guscetti wrote, "no, I have not seen any fighting lately. My last month and a half of soldier life was spent in the old Spanish "Fort Santiago" in Manila. He informed his brother that he had no intention to re-enlist and stated that "I am of the opinion that the army is much better when you read about it and do not see anything of it. Yet, there are some sincere and honest and brave men in it, even though there are some scoundrels and worthless characters."

Frank also described his job in the "Department of Posts" in Manila before he ventured to share his ambition to become a local teacher. He closed the letter with warning to his brother against joining the US Army during a time of peace, instead encouraging him to study.

Biographical / historical:

Private Frank Joseph Guscetti, United States Army (1880 - 1954) was born in Virginia City, Nevada to Angelo and Giuditta Guscetti. Together they also raised raised Olympia Louise, Ralph Emil, William Henry, and Louis Angelo Guscetti. According to a Volunteers Index created during 1898, Pvt. Guscetti served with Company C, First Battalion Nevada Infantry during the Spanish-American War.

Frank J. Guscetti was discharged from the US Army in the spring of 1902 and began working in Manila at the "Department of Posts." According to a voter registration record from California, Guscetti was residing in Alameda County, CA by 1910.
