- Richard E. Kunze (1837-1919) was born in Germany and moved to the United States in 1854 and studied at the National Eclectic Medical Association in New York. Kunze's chief interest was in medical botany, and he specialized in cacti. Kunze was a good friend and correspondent of J. A. Munk. This collection consists of Kunze's correspondence with Munk, manuscript drafts and published manuscripts by Kunze, personal papers, biographical articles, water colors, and collected manuscripts ranging from 1857-1919.

This collection consists of Dr. Richard E. Kunze's correspondence with J. A. (Joseph Amasa) Munk, manuscript drafts and published manuscripts by Kunze, personal papers, biographical articles, watercolors, and collected manuscripts ranging from 1885-1919. This collection also includes Kunze's certificates of emigration to the United States, United States citizenship, and medical practice.

Richard E. Kunze was born in Altenburg, Saxony, Germany 1837 April 7. He came to the United States in 1854 and married Ann McNamee 1857 September 30. Kunze attended Metropolitan Medical College and Eclectic Medical College in New York, and his chief interest was medical botany. Kunze experimented with plants and wrote numerous articles, specializing in cacti. Kunze's wife Ann died 1888 May 2. Kunze relocated to Arizona in 1897 and died near Phoenix on 1919 February 7. Kunze was a good friend and correspondent of J. A. Munk.
