Background

Biographical / historical:

Born in Buffalo, New York, Robert Finn obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Insitute and later his PhD in mathematics from Syracuse University.

He completed his post-doctoral research at the Institutue for Advanced Study in 1953 and from the Institute for Hydodynamics at the Univeristy of Maryland from 1953 to 1954. Later that same year, he became an assistant professor at the University of Southern California until finally beginning his preforssorship at Stanford University in 1959; later becoming professor emeritus of mathematics.

He also earned two Guggenheim fellowships in 1958 and 1965, as well as becoming a Fullbright Fellow in 1987. In 1994 he was awarded with an honorary doctorate from the University of Leipzig. Throughout his career, he authored roughly 150 research papers and edited several academic journals. His best known book is Equilibrium Capillary Surfaces; published in 1986.
