This collection contains five correspondence written by Seaman First Class, John Grayson "Pete" Shindledecker, United States Navy, to his brother and family during the Second World World War. Shindledecker's hometown was Cascade, MD, and he served from 1943-1945 aboard the USS Manatee. He was based in San Francisco, CA and New York City, NY.

The letters are addressed to Harry Z. Shindledecker, who is the donor's grandfather. He calls him "brother" and the letters are sent to him in Blue Ridge Summit, PA. Shindledecker signs his name as "Pete" in the letters.

In the letter dated May 14, 1945 he discusses the end of the war with Germany and expresses hope that the war with the "Japs" will be over soon as well so he can go home.
