Donald Eckert was a San Francisco photographer whose work documents LGBTQIA life and events in San Francisco from the 1970s to the 2000s. Events include parades, marches, street fairs, Halloween gatherings, etc. He also created the website "Uncle Donald's Castro Street" which hosted his photos along with a history of LGBTQIA life in the city. The Eckert papers contain photographs, text for the website, ephemera, magazines and newspapers, and posters.

Scope and content:

The collection includes photographs taken by Donald Eckert between 1970s-2000s. His work documents the LGBTQIA life in San Francisco including parades, marches, street fairs, Halloween gatherings, etc. For many years his photos were available through his website "Uncle Donald's Castro Street." The collection also includes text for the website, ephemera, magazines and newspapers, and posters.

Biographical / historical:

Donald Charles Eckert (June 7, 1941-May 16, 2016) was a San Francisco-based photographer. He was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey and moved to San Francisco in 1969-1970. He moved to the Castro district in 1972. His work documents the LGBTQ life in San Francisco from marches and parades to Halloween gatherings and the Gay Games. He was a friend of Harvey Milk's, and one of Eckert's best known photos is of Milk with President Jimmy Carter. Eckert created the website "Uncle Donald's Castro Street" to share his photos, and those of other photographers, along with the history of gay life in San Francisco.

The collection is currently UNPROCESSED but available for research. Please contact the Photo Curator for boxes 1-8; these boxes are available for use during Photo Desk hours. Please contact the Hormel Center archivist for boxes 9-16; these boxes are available during San Francisco History Center hours.

All requests for permission to publish from photographs must be submitted in writing to the Photo Curator. Copyright has been transferred to the San Francisco Public Library. Permission for publication is given as the copyright holder.
