Background
- Scope and content:
-
The collection consists of 88 large rolled maps drawn chiefly by Félix Violé; the maps are of Los Angeles city, county, and surrounding areas. There are 10 brown line prints but the majority of the maps are in black ink on tracing cloth; these maps were probably the masters on which his published maps were based. The collection also includes maps drawn by Homer Hamlin, T. G. Koeberle, and Fernand Rouseyrol.
- Biographical / historical:
-
Félix Violé (1856-1925) was born in Bayonne, France; he trained as a civil engineer and became a Los Angeles surveyor and map publisher. He came to Los Angeles, California, in 1887, and was editor of the French language newspaper "Le Progres." In 1896, Violé was hired as a draftsman field engineer and surveyor for the City Engineer of Los Angeles, and in 1900 he began publishing official maps of the city and county of Los Angeles. In 1902, Violé formed his own company, the Félix Violé Map Company, later called Félix Violé Blue Printing and Félix Violé and Son.
