Scope and content:

Contains Hardly Strictly Bluegrass promotional materials – including flyers, magazine and newspaper articles and snapshots. Contains some original newsprint, most content was printed from online news sources and websites. Snapshots were also printed. The scrapbook does not include photographs.

Biographical / historical:

Held annually the first weekend of October in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass is a free three-day music festival drawing crowds of over 750,000 people. Initially known as the Strictly Bluegrass Festival, the name was adapted when additional music genres were added to the performance lineup. The first festival was headlined by Emmylou Harris in 2001.

Capitalist and bluegrass enthusiast Warren Hellman founded the festival in 2001. Hellman funded the event until his death in 2011, bequeathing an endowment – now managed by the Hellman Foundation – which continues to sponsor the festival.

Access and use

Restrictions:

The collection is available for use during San Francisco History Center hours, with photographs available during Photo Desk hours. Collections that are stored offsite should be requested 48 hours in advance.

Terms of access:

All requests for permission to publish or quote from manuscripts must be submitted in writing to the City Archivist. Permission for publication is given on behalf of the San Francisco Public Library as the owner of the physical items.
