Primarily correspondence to Dunlap, with some telegrams and statements; Dunlap's certificates of appointment are included. The bulk of the material concerns land problems, especially as related to the railroads. Also contains material on military desertions, fugitives, illegal liquor traffic and various matters related to the duties of the Deputy Marshal of the United States. 1868-1890, undated.

Dunlap was appointed Deputy U.S. Marshal for the District of California in 1868; he was appointed Deputy U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of California in 1869; he was again appointed to the Southern District in 1874.
