This collection reflects Duffy’s interest in prisons, the causes of criminal behavior, and capital punishment. Highlights of the collection include: Extensive newspaper and magazine clippings on the topics of San Quentin, Clinton Duffy, the death penalty; Materials related to his books 88 Men and 2 Women, From Heroin to San Quentin, and a copy of Sex and Crime; Drafts of articles written by Duffy on crime and prisons; A collection of prison recipes that Duffy planned to use in a cookbook Histories of San Quentin State Prison

Biographical / historical:

Clinton T. Duffy served as the warden of San Question prison from 1940 to 1952. Duffy introduced many reforms to improve prisoners’ lives and prepare them for release, such as abolishing corporal punishment, working with counselors, establishing the first Alcoholics Anonymous group behind bars, and bringing high school and college classes, athletics, and job training to the prison. In his retirement, he lectured against capital punishment and wrote books about his experiences.
