Grigori Mints, a Russian philosopher and mathematician renowned for his work in mathematical logic, was born in Leningrad, Soviet Union (now St. Petersburg, Russia), on June 7, 1939. He obtained his Ph.D. in 1965 from Leningrad State University under the guidance of Nikolai Aleksandrovich Shanin, completing his thesis titled "On Predicate and Operator Variants for Building Theories of Constructive Mathematics." Revered as one of the world's eminent logicians, Mints was deeply invested in the philosophical applications of logic, particularly in the realm of proof theory – the meticulous examination of the structure of mathematical reasoning.
His outstanding contributions led to his election into the Estonian Academy of Sciences in 2008 and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2010. Unfortunately, Mints passed away on May 29, 2014, just short of his 75th birthday, leaving behind a legacy of significant contributions to both logic and philosophy.
