Amy Deeter California Hiking Clubs scrapbooks. San Francisco Public Library, San Francisco History Center
Background
- Scope and content:
-
The collection includes eleven scrapbooks created by Deeter, a member of several organizations. The earliest material is her typewritten account of hitchhiking around California with her friend Norah Roberts, 1924. There is a gap until 1936, when she was affiliated with the Contra Costa Hills Club (CCHC), which was focused on preserving open space in the East Bay and on hiking. Scrapbooks include Deeter's detailed typewritten accounts of various excursions, along with correspondence, photographs, Sierra Club, California Alpine Club, Tamalpais Conservation Club, and CCHC publications, and ephemera. Some correspondence of Harold French, founder of CCHC, is included. Deeter, a popular storyteller, documented her storytelling at various club gatherings.
- Biographical / historical:
-
Amy Deeter was born in Michigan. She married Conrad Askerberg of Detroit in 1914; the couple divorced in San Francisco in 1927. Deeter worked as a stenographer in San Francisco, and hitchhiked from San Francisco to Yosemite and back with her friend Norah Roberts in 1924. Roberts married Thomas F. Maddick, and Amy and Norah remained friends until Amy's death. Deeter was a storyteller, and an officer of the Golden Gate Story League in San Francisco during the time she created these scrapbooks.
