Jeanie Bernstein was an activist and advocate for peace in southern California. In Orange County, she helped found the Alliance for Survival, a peace and environmental organization, and was an integral part of the peace movement in the area. Bernstein hosted an long-running peace vigil on Main Street in Laguna Beach, and she fought against the use of nuclear weapons and power plants, supported local environmental efforts, and protested the Korean, Vietnam, Gulf, and Iraq Wars. The majority of materials in this collection are the records of the Alliance for Survival. Topics include Earth Day and environmentalism, nuclear waste and power plants, the Winter Conference on Aerospace and Electronic Systems (Wincon), Seal Beach, San Onofre, Ward Valley, the Gulf War, and peace activism. Included are reports; collected clippings; buttons, stickers, and other ephemera; audio and video tapes; lawsuit proceedings; correspondence; books; and newsletters.

Biographical / historical:

Jeanie Bernstein was an activist and advocate for peace in southern California. Born in Ohio in 1923, she moved to California as a child and witnessed poverty and injustice in school during the Great Depression and later during World War II. In Orange County, she helped found the Alliance for Survival, a peace and environmental organization, and was an integral part of the peace movement in the area. Bernstein hosted an long-running vigil on Main Street in Laguna Beach, where she would protest war efforts and other acts of violence and injustice. She fought against the use of nuclear weapons and power plants, supported local environmental efforts, and protested the Korean, Vietnam, Gulf, and Iraq Wars. Bernstein was active in the peace community until her death in 2011 at the age of 88.
