Background

Scope and content:

Records and other material from the now-defunct American Musical Theatre, originally formed in 1935 as the San Jose Civic Light Opera Association. Includes financial and administrative records, primarily from post-1965 operations; scrapbooks and production photographs dating to the 1940s; programs, press and theater posters; and a small number of costume and set design drawings.

Biographical / historical:

The American Musical Theatre of San Jose was founded in 1935 as the San Jose Civic Light Opera Association, and was a mainstay of San Jose's theater world for decades. After struggling for several years with mounting deficits, AMT was left with heavy losses from which they could not recover after a co-production of "Tarzan" with Atlanta and Dallas companies collapsed in 2008. On December 23, 2008, AMT filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.
