This is an 18-paged typed copy of a manuscript by Walter Kerr Halsted entitled "My Trip to California in '49," wherein Halsted recounts the four years he spent traveling to and living in California, starting in 1849. Halsted was 91 at the time he wrote the original manuscript.

The extended title of the account is "My Trip to California in '49. Via boat to Panama, overland to the Pacific, and up the coast to San Francisco by boat." The document describes Halsted's life in California during the gold rush days; lynching; method of mining; Native Americans; and clipper ships.
