Abstract:
Digitized documents and sound recordings captured by the United States military, including Al-Qaeda and associated movements documents captured in Afghanistan, and Saddam Hussein regime documents and sound recordings captured in Iraq. The materials date between the 1970s and 2003 and all original documents are accompanied by a summary cover sheet in English and English translations.

Background

Scope and content:

The Conflict Records Research Center (CRRC) collection consists of two record series. The Al-Qaeda and associated movements ("AQ/AQAM") series includes of a wide range of files captured in Afghanistan, including financial records, theological and ideological documents, strategic plans, operational guidebooks, and histories of individual operations. There are also a small number of documents generated by the Taliban government in Afghanistan.

The Saddam Hussein ("SH") regime series includes a wide range of government files captured in Iraq, including correspondence between ministries, and records of the Presidential Diwan and others pertaining to issues related to national security, defense policy, and diplomacy. It also includes over 150 hours of sound recordings of high-level meetings, conversations between Saddam and his top officials, and speeches by Saddam and other senior officials.

The materials date between the 1970s and 2003. All original documents are accompanied by English translations. Each set of digitized records was originally catalogued with a record number, title, and date and arranged into record groups by subject by the CRRC. The materials have been maintained in their original record groups and are listed in numerical order by record number. All title statements and dates in this finding aid have been transcribed from CRRC record indexes.

Note about English translations: All original documents are accompanied by English translations that were transferred to Hoover as existing components of this collection. Hoover has not verified the completeness and/or accuracy of these translations; they should be considered unofficial in relation to the original Arabic documents.

Biographical / historical:

Conflict Records Research Center (CRRC) was established by the National Defense University in Washington, D.C., to fulfill the United States Secretary of Defense's intent to enable research using captured records.

Restrictions:

Users must sign use agreement: use agreement. The collection is open for research; materials must be requested in advance via our reservation system.
