Background

Scope and content:

Photograph album containing 13 black and white, silver gelatin, photographic prints showing the stages of construction of Winehaven at Point Molate, Richmond, California between 1907 and 1909. Photographs show unidentified men (most likely Winehaven associates) standing at railroad crossing at Point Molate; construction of the Winehaven facilities including various buildings and a pier; a Union Pacific Railroad boxcar and railroad tracks; women, men, and children standing on patio of a Winehaven building; and the view of Winehaven from the San Pablo Bay. Many photographs show the storage tanks of the Chevron Richmond Refinery in the Potrero Hills, located north and east of the Winehaven facilities. Front and back pages of photograph album have sticker labeled: "California Camera Co., Haight and Sixth, Alameda, Cal."

Biographical / historical:

In the aftermath of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire the California Wine Association moved its headquarters to Point Molate on the east shore of the San Pablo Bay in Richmond, California, naming the facilities Winehaven. Between 1907 and 1919, Winehaven held the title of the world's largest winery, shipping 500,000 gallons of wine to both foreign and national locations. Upon the passage of the Eighteenth Amendment (Prohibition) the winery shut down and sold off its assets to avoid bankruptcy.
