Background

Scope and content:

This is a typed manuscript documenting the Jacob Ross family from 1865 to 1900 through oral histories, photographs, and research compiled by Lecil E. Ross in 1951. This document was prepared by Lecil E. Ross, who also authored the Jacob Ross Family History. Donation correspondence is included. This collection also includes a Family Group Record produced by Raymond R. Ross in 1996.

Biographical / historical:

Southwest Museum director Frederick Webb Hodge was inspired by H. H. Bancroft to collect dictated memoirs of pioneers for the Bancroft Library in Berkeley, and reached out to the community for stories of families who were established in Early California. Lecil E. Ross answered the call, donating family histories for his paternal grandfather, Jacob Ross, Sr., and his family in California from 1865-1900 and for Lecil's maternal grandfather, George Lunsford Russell, who was a landowner in Los Angeles County before Los Angeles was 100 years old. The Ross and Russell families settled near each other and eventually intermarried. The Russell land was about a mile northeast of what is currently Santa Ana.
