Background

Scope and content:

All of the photographs, published by the London photography house Marion and Co., often credited with introducing the "carte-de-visite" to Britain in 1857, were taken from the same vantage point, opposite the National Gallery, as the procession made its way from Buckingham Palace to St. Paul's Cathedral, and back. Album contains views of governors, other dignitaries, and military units from countries throughout the British Empire, including Canada, Australia--states of New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland--New Zealand, Trinidad, Ceylon, Jamaica, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Malta, Sierra Leone, and India. Also included are shots of British and foreign royalty; Queen Victoria herself is visible in the last four photographs, accompanied in her state carriage by the Princess of Wales, and Princess Christian.
