- Biographical / historical:
-
Clive Bell (1881-1964) was an English art critic and a central figure in the Bloomsbury group -- a group of friends, artists, writers, and intellectuals focused on the importance of the arts. Bell's major works of criticism include "Art," "Since Cezanne," and "Civilization." He was married to the painter Vanessa Bell, who was the sister of Virginia Woolf; they had two sons Julian and Quentin. By 1914, their marriage was over, but they never officially separated or divorced and entered into relationships with other people; Clive Bell raised Angelica (Bell) Garnett as his own child though her father was the painter Duncan Grant.
