Scope and content:

The collection contains materials from Nancy Bray's time at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography from 1983 to 1997. Bray's research was primarily focused on ocean throughflow and circulation, exchange through straits, and continental shelf dynamics. Includes correspondence, teaching files, log books, research notes and data files documenting her coastal studies. This collection also includes a small amount of material documenting Bray's education, including some notes while she was a student at Wood Holes Institute. Research notes and data files document Bray's studies of the Gulf of California, the Gulf of Mexico and the Indonesian Archipelago, as well as her participation in the Northern California Coastal Circulation Study (NCCCS) and her work with the Minerals Management Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Biographical / historical:

Nancy Amanda "Nan" Bray received her B.S. in engineering physics from University California, Berkeley in 1975, and she earned her PhD in physical oceanography from a joint program with MIT and Woods Hole in 1981. Her thesis was "Seasonal Variability in the Intermediate Waters of the Eastern North Atlantic." After finishing her post-doctoral work, Bray was awarded a Mellon Foundation Fellow and began her work at Scripps Institute of Oceanography from 1983 through 1997. In 1997 she became the Chief of Division, Marine Research, Tasmania, with CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization).
