- Born in 1881, Buren Roscoe Schryrock was a conductor, composer and director for various orchestras and operas in Southern California, mostly active during from the mid-1910 to the mid-1930s. He served as the director for the music program at Union College in Nebraska. In 1909, he moved to California, where he worked as the conductor for the Riverside Symphony Orchestra until 1913, when he was approached to become the director for the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. In 1920, he took on the position of conductor for the San Diego Grand Opera Company which he retained until 1936. The company produced operas every year, showcasing notable singers from the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Amongst the first produced was “Rigoletto”, presented at the Balboa auditorium, but others were also performed at the Speckles Theatre and the Russ Auditorium. Afterwards, he wrote several operas, and he continued to teach as a voice instructor. He was living in Old Town, San Diego when he died in 1974.

The collection consists of several opera programs ranging from 1916 to 1926, and concerts produced from his time with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra and the Riverside Orchestral association, as well as for the 3rd and 4th May Music Festival of 1915 and 1916. Also included are a personal interview, a photograph of himself and the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, and an obituary from a newspaper.
