Scope and content:

The collection consists of drafts of motion picture, television, and radio scripts, story ideas and outlines, treatments, publicity, and correspondence related to the career of screenwriter Elwood Ullman. Includes materials for motion pictures such as The Three Stooges, The Bowery Boys, and Ma and Pa Kettle and television series such as All star comedy, Any Clyde comedy, Hugh Hubert comedy, and Stooge comedy.

Biographical / historical:

Elwood Ullman was born in Memphis, Tennessee ca. 1903. After graduating from the University of Washington, Ullman worked as a reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. In the late 1920s, he moved to Hollywood, CA to start a screen writing career working for both Columbia and RKO studios. His writing credits include drama and comedy, but he is best known for the more than 190 Three Stooges comedy features he wrote. In addition to his screenwriting, Ullman wrote short stories and articles for such publications as the Saturday Evening Post and Esquire. Ullman died October 11, 1985 in Los Angeles, CA.
