Biographical / historical:

Donald Galleano is the third-generation winemaker and owner of Galleano Winery, an historic winery that is located in Mira Loma, California. Galleano's grandfather, Domenico, started the winery in 1933 after the end of Prohibition.

Donald Galleano was born on March 26, 1952. His parents were Bernard (Nino) and Mary Galleano. Donald Galleano grew up on the ranch that his family purchased from the family of Esteban Cantu, the former governor for the Northern District of Baja, California. At that time, the area where the ranch was located was known as Wineville but the area's name was changed to Mira Loma in 1930. Many of the old wineries that made up Wineville were out of business when Galleano was growing up so he would often go through the old buildings and pick up artifacts.

Galleano attended Jurupa High School and, after graduation, began working as a farmer in Bakersfield, California - a job he had been doing during the summer since he was 16. Galleano later earned an associate degree from Riverside Community College in 1972 and studied business administration at San Jose State University.

In about 1975, Galleano's father announced plans to shut down the Galleano Winery, which prompted the younger Galleano to return to Southern California and take over the responsibility of running the family business. As he took on the new role, he received training in the wine business from both his father and grandfather. His father, Bernard (Nino) died in 1983 and his grandfather, Domenico, died in 1984.

Galleano Winery remains active in Mira Loma. It has won awards for its Sherry, Port, Angelica, and Zinfandel wines. The winery was entered into the National Register of Historic Places in May of 2003.

Donald is now joined by his son, Domenic, in running the winery. Donald and his wife also have two other children.

In addition to his role as a winemaker, Donald Galleano has served as a wine judge in international wine competitions. He has also been a member of the Los Angeles County Fair Wine Competition Steering Committee, past president of the Jurupa Chamber of Commerce, founding director of De Anza National Bank, and a member of the American Society for Enology and Viticulture.
