Background
- Scope and content:
-
This collection contains nine letters, ten postcards, two photographs, and a menu for a banquet at the U.S.A. Base Hospital 38 held at the Hotel de Bretagne, Nantes, on 29 March 1919. Andrée Laheux, an "Odette," and Edouard Choupay sent the correspondence and postcards to a Walter Lanagan. Most of the correspondence comes from Andrée Laheux, of Nantes, France. This is probably the same Walter P. Lanagan stationed at the American Red Cross Hospital at Nantes, France, in World War I. See W.M.L. Coplin, American Red Cross Base Hospital No. 38 in the World War: United States Army Base Hospital No. 38, Organized Under the Auspices of the Jefferson Medical College and Hospital, Stationed at Nantes, France, 1918-1919 (Philadelphia: E.A. Wright Co., 1923), p. 238. Also see Walter P. Lanagan's photograph between pages 156-157. An on-line search reveals a Walter P. Lanagan who was born perhaps in Philadelphia, in 1898 and was still living there in 1940.
The authors of the letters principally lament Lanagan's absence and his failure to respond to their letters.
Because of the fragility of the letters, photocopies have been substituted for the originals, except for the letter from Edouard Choupay of 5 June 1919 (Folder 1). A photocopy has also been substituted for the menu for the banquet for U.S.A. Base Hospital 38, in folder 3.
