- Biographical / historical:
-
American television networks began made-for-television movies in late 1964; by the early-1970s they had become a mainstay of network programming. Over the years, the range of movie offerings have been on par with theatrical film releases, within restricted timelines and budgets. Ultimately, television movies provided a venue for topical or controversial themes, not deemed appropriate for regularly scheduled network programing. The flexible time constraints of the medium made it possible to present full-legnth filmed versions of popular literary works, particularly through the TV mini-series.
