Eleven glass lantern slides taken along the Tahoe State Road, the Precursor Road to Hwy 50, in California. Includes photos of a camp, water tank, an old chimney and other natural and manmade landmarks. Each slide has "Made by WM. F. Booth, San Francisco" printed on one border edge.

These lantern slides show a dirt road (State Road) for automobile use going up and over the Sierras to the Tahoe region. They make for an unspoiled 1910 scenic tour of the route, which would evolve into Highway 50.

The titles of the ten lantern slides include:

  • 1599 June 1910 Camp near Folsom. Cal. - Shows two people by an early auto (Model T?) in a grassy field.
  • 1600 June 1910 Water Tank on Tahoe State Road. - Shows the auto below the water tank along the side of the road.
  • 1601 June 1910 Traction Train / Tahoe State Road. - Shows the auto in the foreground with a train of lumber behind it.
  • 1605 June 1910 On the Tahoe State Road, Cal. - Shows the auto along the road side.
  • 1606 June 1910 Rocks, Tahoe State Road, Cal. - Shows auto in the middle of the road with a large rock formation along one side.
  • 1607 June 1910 Old Chimney / Tahoe State Road.- Shows the auto parked near a tall stone chimney.
  • 1608 June 1910 Sugar-Loaf Rock / Tahoe State Road. - Shows a rock formation in front of the auto. The photograph was taken behind the rear of the auto.
  • 1609 June 1910 Strawberry Valley Tahoe State Road. - Shows mountainous road through the trees.
  • 1611 June 1910 Tahoe State Road above Strawberry Val. - Shows auto on the road.
  • 1612 June 1910 Mts. Above Strawberry / Tahoe Region. - Mountain view.

Biographical / historical:

William F. Booth compiled a large collection of lantern slides around the turn of the 20th century, many of which are in the Pat Hathaway Photo Collection. A patent attorney, William F. Booth (1857-1943) and his wife, Emily [Gibbons], lived in San Francisco and later in Berkeley. His San Francisco business address before the 1906 earthquake and fire was 14 Sansome St; after the disaster, his office was in the Foxcroft Building at 68 Post Street, SF.
