Background

Scope and content:

The collection includes minutes and notes of the meetings of the People’s Food System (San Francisco) and materials on the cooperative food movement in the San Francisco Bay Area during the 1970s. Biographical / historical:

Mark Ritchie was a key leader in the People's Food System of the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1960s and 1970s. The system was composed of food co-ops, worker collectives and a series of wholesale collectives that supported the retail stores, including a bakery, produce, trucking, cheese, grains, and so on. The mission was food for people not for profit, healthy food and land, and a new way of making decisions.

In particular, Mark Ritchie worked with Red Star Cheese Collective and Earthworks, an urban food and agricultural library. He went on to many other accomplishments, including serving as Secretary of State of Minnesota.
