Abstract:
The Thing was a quarterly periodical in the form of an object that ran from 2007 to 2017. Each year, four artists, writers, musicians or filmmakers were invited by the editors (Jonn Herschend and Will Rogan) to create an everyday object that somehow incorporated text. The object was then reproduced, hand wrapped at a wrapping party, and mailed to subscribers' homes with the help of the United States Postal Service.
Extent:
14 Linear Feet (28 boxes, 3 volumes, 1 tube)
Language:
Collection material is predominantly in English.

Background

Scope and content:

"THE THING Quarterly is an object based publication produced by visual artists Jonn Herschend and Will Rogan that ran from 2007-2017. Each issue was conceived of by a different contributor. The object was reproduced, wrapped, and shipped to the subscribers. THE THING Projects was an off-shoot that encompasses a wide range of artworks and events." -- THE THING website, https://www.thethingquarterly.com/, viewed 7 October 2024.

Biographical / historical:

"THE THING began in 2007 as an experimental publication by visual artists Jonn Herschend and Will Rogan. It was an effort to open up a new, affordable access point to experiencing art. Not thinking the project would last more than a year, Jonn and Will made all of the objects by hand. Now, THE THING is a collaboration between the small team assembled in our office, the many contributors we invite to take part, and a range of designers, makers, and manufacturers. We provide a platform for artists to push the boundaries of object-making and address the problem of how to see and create meaning in our daily lives. We hope we inspire you to consider the meaning of other objects in your life, too." -- THE THING website, www.thethingquarterly.com, viewed 7 October 2024.
