Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains newsletters and records documenting the activities of the Peninsula Professional Network (PPN), also known as The Network, a Monterey Bay area LGBTQ professional, social, and educational organization founded in 1983. The bulk of the collection contains issues of PPN’s newsletter, published monthly from 1984-2005, and mailed to members. Newsletters initially contained information regarding past and future PPN meetings, such as guest speakers and topics addressed, details of PPN sponsored events, and information about community events and organizations. Occasionally, photocopies of newsclippings and political cartoons were included in the newsletters. The newsletters expanded in the September 1, 1987 issue with the addition of a “Bulletin Board” section to include announcements from PPN members.

Additional materials include promotional fliers for events or organizations related to PPN or considered to be of interest to PPN members. Also included are financial statements from 1990-2003, reflecting revenue from membership dues and events and expenses associated with operations and donations. Other materials include meeting planning notes, general correspondence, a circa 1996 press release, and information related to the Monterey County AIDS Project.

Biographical / historical:

The Peninsula Professional Network (PPN), also known as The Network, was a Monterey Bay area LGBTQ professional, social, and educational organization founded in 1983. As stated in the organization's original invitational flier, “The Peninsula Professional Network is an invitational association of men and women who live and work in the Monterey and Santa Cruz counties. We define professional as a matter of attitude and seek a way to meet and make friends with people of similar interests in a way which celebrates the best we have to offer as complete and whole human beings.”

Processing information:

Materials were originally housed in a binder and were rehoused in folders during processing. Newsletters and fliers were kept in original order, as most fliers were included as part of the newsletter mailing, and events promoted in the flier were often mentioned in that month’s newsletter. General correspondence, financial information, and other miscellaneous materials were separated for ease of access.

Collection processed by Robin Guthrie, 2017.
