Abstract:
Papers of Santa Barbara comedian, radio personality, and police detective Mark A. Ward (1948-2024). This small collection includes videotapes, audiotapes, CDs, 45 and 33 1/3 rpm record disks, photographs, clippings, brochures and ephemera covering Ward's activities as part of the comedy duo Procter & Ward during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Scope and content:

These papers comprise materials from the comedy career of Santa Barbara, California, comedian, radio personality, and police detective Mark A. Ward (1948-2024). The collection contains loose 8" x 11" publicity stills, snapshots, personal items, press clippings, and promotional ephemera covering his activities with Richard Procter as part of the comedy duo Procter & Ward, along with videocassettes, audiotapes, CDs, and 45 and 33 1/3 rpm record disks from that time (approximately 1974-1983). Also included in the collection is a flyer and transcript of a speech delivered by Sheriff Bill Brown in honor of Ward at his retirement from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department in 2015.

Biographical / historical:

Mark A. Ward (1948-2024) was a 1970s alternative radio personality and member of the DeLuxe Radio Theater Company in Santa Barbara, California, along with Richard Procter. Known for their KTYD-FM radio news show, the Nude Nooze, the two performed stand-up comedy together as the Fabulous DeLuxe Brothers, as well as a live satirical radio commentary on Santa Barbara's annual Fiesta Parade.

Originally employed as a police officer in Needles, California in the late 1960s, Ward returned to law enforcement after his time in radio comedy, first as a patrol officer in Lompoc, California. He joined the Santa Barbara Sherriff's office in 1994. After five years working as a detective, he transferred to the Isla Vista Foot Patrol in Isla Vista, California, retiring from the force in 2015.
