The Elliott Evans photograph collection, circa 1887-1920s, (SAFR 23360, P78-064a) is comprised mainly of steam schooners in unidentified locations. The collection has been processed to the Collection level and is open for use.

Contains photographs of CASPAR (steam schooner), MARY E. MOORE (built 1913; steam schooner), and unidentified vessels. There are 6 photographic images in 13 physical forms (4 nitrate negatives, 3 contact interpositives, 3 copy negatives, 2 black-and-white photographic postcards, 1 black-and-white photographic print).

CASPAR: The Caspar Lumber Co. owned three steam schooners named CASPAR that carried lumber from the Mendocino Coast during 1887-1939. It is unknown which of the three CASPARs is pictured in this collection. The first CASPAR was built of wood in 1887 at San Francisco, California, by Hansen & Frazer. She wrecked at Saunder's Reef, near Point Arena, California, just after midnight October 22, 1897. The second CASPAR was bought by the lumber company in 1911 (renamed from CAPISTRANO, built 1907 at Aberdeen, Washington, by John Lindestrom). She was laid up in December 1925, sold to the Alaska Salmon Co. in 1930, and was scrapped at Sausalito, California in 1940. The third CASPAR was steel-hulled, built in Alameda, California by United Engineering Works and completed in the spring of 1904 as NUSHAGAK. NUSHAGAK was acquired on June 6, 1924 by Remco Steamship Co., the marine subsidiary of Caspar Lumber. NUSHAGAK retained that name until 1930 when CASPAR 2 was sold. CASPAR 3 retired in March 1939. MARY E. MOORE was built in 1913 as GRACE DOLLAR. She was renamed ADMIRAL WAINWRIGHT in 1918; renamed AGNES DOLLAR in 1921; and renamed MARY E. MOORE in 1923. The vessel sank off Coquille River, Oregon on February 23, 1927.

No biographical information could be found on Elliott Evans. He is sometimes referred to as Dr. Elliott Evans on envelopes housing his donated photographs.

SAFR-00001, GOGA-00789: These photographs were a gift from Elliott Evans and were formally accessioned on March 14, 1978.

SAFR-00001 is a blanket accession that was transferred from the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) to the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park in September 1988. GGNRA had previously acquired the collection from the San Francisco Maritime Museum when it became a unit of the National Park Service in 1977.

GOGA-00789 was transferred from the J. Porter Shaw Library to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) in February 1985.

Processing information:

The accession paperwork indicates that 7 nitrate negatives were originally donated by Evans. However, only 4 nitrate negatives could be located in March 2013. It is unknown if the 3 missing nitrates were discarded at some point in time, but they were not in the nitrate discard box in March 2013.

Item 6: (CASPAR (steam schooner) underway in Caspar, California, stern view, circa 1887-1920s) was somehow accidentally added to the Hanscom photograph collection (SAFR 19542, P79-064a) between 1967 and the 1980s, and assigned the number P79-064a.15. This mistake was likely made due to the similarities of the collection numbers. The mistake probably happened when the nitrate negative was duplicated by SAFR staff in the 1980s (and a contact interpositive and copy negative were made for the image).

While processing the Hanscom photograph collection (P79-064a) in February 2013, it was discovered that Item number 15 did not belong with the collection: in addition to the fact that the number of negatives did not match the accession paperwork and the subject matter of the item did not match the original accession at all, Item 15 had "Gift of Dr. Elliott Evans in October 1967" written on the envelope. The nitrate negative, contact interpositive and copy negative were returned to this collection (P78-064a) in February 2013 and assigned the Item number 6.

Each photographic image has been assigned an Item number; there are often multiple physical forms of each image (e.g. a nitrate negative, a contact interpositive, and a copy negative) which has been noted in the physical description field. SAFR staff made contact interpositives and copy negatives of the nitrate negatives in the 1980s, except for Item 3.
