Background
- Biographical / historical:
-
John Harbin Rousselot (1927-2003) was a Republican congressional representative from southern California who represented parts of the San Gabriel Valley in the U.S. House of Representatives for 14 years. Rousselot was first elected to the Eighty-seventh Congress (1961-1963) by California's 25th congressional district. Following his unsuccessful reelection to the Eighty-eighth Congress, Rousselot worked as a management consultant and Western regional director for the conservative advocacy group, the John Birch Society. Rousselot returned to Congress in 1970, elected by California's 24th congressional district to serve the Ninety-first Congress and the six succeeding Congresses (1970-1983). While in Congress, Rousselot served on various banking and budgetary committees, including the Committee on Banking and Currency and the Committee on Ways and Means, generally adopting stances against public spending and tax increases. After leaving Congress, Rousselot worked as special assistant to President Ronald Reagan, as president of the National Council of Savings Institutions, and as the final chairman and chief executive of Lincoln Savings and Loan.
- Processing information:
-
The John H. Rousselot papers have been partially processed at various times, but the collection remains largely inaccessible due to inaccuracies in the outdated description of the collection. Description for the first three series in this finding aid (housed in Box nos. 1-14) are up to date. However, the material described in these initial series comprise a small fraction of the collection as a whole. Container records for the collection's unprocessed boxes are listed under the record titled "[Unprocessed material]."
Researchers can view an outdated finding aid for the collection as a PDF document (see the digital object record linked to this finding aid under "Digital Material"). Note that the box numbers listed in this legacy finding aid do not accurately reflect how the boxes in the collection are currently numbered. Consequently, the connections between the outdated finding aid's box-level descriptions and their corresponding box number(s) may be misleading in many cases.
Special Collections will continue to add to the updated description for this collection as time and resources allow.
