Background

Biographical / historical:

Daniel Kingman (1924-2003) was born in Los Angeles, California. After serving in the military during World War II, he focused on his music career and attended several educational institutions, including Pomona College, the Eastman School of Music (Masters) and Michigan State University (PhD). In 1956, he became Professor of Music at Sacramento State. He was active in a variety of symphonies, including the Kronos Quartet, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Woodwind Quintet and the Camellia Symphony. Since the 1950s, he created a variety of musical compositions for operas, ballets, symphony orchestras, bands and choir, some of which were published by Theodore Presser, Edwin Kalmus, and Western International Music. Throughout his lifetime, he received several composers' awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). In 1979, he authored the textbook, American Music: A Panorama.
