- Biographical / historical:
-
The Ethical Culture Society was founded in 1876 by Dr. Felix Adler (1851-1933) as a new movement to further the advancement of social justice for all. The Ethical Culture Society of Los Angeles (ECSLA) was a regional chapter of the national organization. Citing dwindling membership and the lack of leadership succession, the ECSLA chapter was disbanded in 2007. The Society is aligned with the Humanist Movement and stresses adherence to ethical principles, the inherent worth of the individual, and the responsibility of doing good in the world. The spread of the Ethical Culture Movement resulted in the establishment of over twenty-eight societies and fellowships in communities throughout the United States with a strong involvement in the social and political events of the day.
