Abstract:
Imprimerie Jeanbin was a French printing company in operation from 1840-1962. The collection includes artwork created in the design and production of French wine labels, as well as printed wine labels, menus, wine lists, and brochures related to Imprimerie Jeanbin. Also included in the collectuion are labels for other beverages as well as label designs and press proofs for cigarettes (Gauloises), a liquor store in Guadalupe, wine shop brochures, and several unidentified images.

Background

Scope and content:

The collection includes nearly 1300 pieces of artwork created in the design and production of French wine labels, as well as more than 500 printed wine labels, menus, wine lists, and brochures related to Imprimerie Jeanbin. Most of the label art is hand painted in gouache; some is in watercolor and ink; and some pieces are collages of original photographs and engravings. Most of the labels date from the 1920s-1960s. Also included in the collectuion are labels for other beverages such as cider, pastis, vermouth, rum, cassis, eau-de-vie, poire william, Calvados, coffee, lemonade, and water. The collection also contains label designs and press proofs for cigarettes (Gauloises), a liquor store in Guadalupe, wine shop brochures, and several unidentified images.
