Scope and content:

A collection of material related to the writer Charles Fletcher Lummis; the bulk of the items in the collection were written to or inscribed to Robert J. H. DeLoach. The material includes one typewritten letter, autograph notes, printed ephemera, and three published volumes. The published volumes reflect some of Lummis' varied interests, especially his affinity for the history and cultures of the Southwest; two of the volumes are inscribed by Lummis to DeLoach and one to Purd B. Wright. The printed ephemera includes a printed fundraising appeal for his preservation-minded organization, The Landmarks Club.

Biographical / historical:

Charles Fletcher Lummis (1859-1928) was born in Lynn, Massachusetts. He became a journalist and then an activist for Native American rights and historic preservation. A traveler in the American Southwest, he settled in Los Angeles, California, where he also became known as a historian, photographer, ethnographer, archaeologist, poet, and librarian. Lummis founded the Southwest Museum of the American Indian. He died in Los Angeles, California, on November 25, 1928. Robert John Henderson DeLoach (1873-1974) was a Georgia-based botanist, writer, and close friend of the American poet John Burroughs.
