Murray Goodman was born in New York City in 1928. He received his B.S. in Chemistry from Brooklyn College in 1949 before attending University of California, Berkeley where he earned his doctorate while studying in the lab of Nobel Prize winning scientist Melvin Calvin. His postdoctoral research at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Cambridge University in England focused on the emerging area of peptide chemistry. He returned to New York City in 1956 to join the faculty of the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn as an assistant professor. He was promoted to full professor in 1964, and became the director of the Polymer Research Institute soon afterwards. Goodman joined the faculty of UC San Diego in 1970, where he remained until his death in 2004. He served in many capacities at UC San Diego, including Chair of the Chemistry Department and Provost of Revelle College. He was also honored with an eponymous endowed professorship, the Goodman Chair in Chemistry.
Goodman was also one of the founders and longtime editors of the scientific journals Biopolymers and Peptide Science, the latter being the official journal of the American Peptide Society. He also served as the President of the American Peptide Society from 2001 until 2003. He was personally involved in the authorship of over 500 articles and published the textbook Organic Molecules in Action. Over the course of his career, he advised over 80 doctoral students and mentored more than 200 postdoctoral researchers, including international scholars, at both the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn and UC San Diego.
