Background

Scope and content:

The collection includes papers and works of art, including sketches, paintings, and a pair of painted pants, created by Richard (Dick) Caldwell Brewer (1923-2014). Brewer was a San Francisco-based artist and gay man. Many of his subjects include male nudes and male portraits. The collection also includes material by and related to Steven Krstich. Krstich and Brewer lived together for some time and Krstich often posed for Brewer’s artwork. Around 1970, Krstich’s brother broke into Brewer’s apartment and slashed the faces off of several of Brewer’s paintings of Krstich. These paintings are included in the collection.
