The Markaz: Resource Center for Engagement with the Cultures and Peoples of the Muslin World was established in 2013, and is located in the Nitery Building of Old Union. The center serves the community that identifies or has an interest in Islamic culture, the Muslim world, global Muslim communities and non-Muslim minorities within the Muslim world. The Markaz is affiliated with numerous Volunteer Student Organizations, including the Arab Students Associuation at Stanford, Stanford Students for Justice in Palestine, the Muslim Student Union, and others.
The Markaz is part of the lineage of Stanford's Muslim community, which dates back to 1950 with the Islamic Society at Stanford University (ISSU). The Muslim community at Stanford grew during the 1990's, when a wave of second-generation students entered the university and expanded the focus of the ISSU. As a result, numerous new organizations emerged, including the Muslim Student Awareness Network, the Turkish Student Association, and Pakastanis at Stanford, among many others. Through the 1990's to present, the number of organizations and the Muslim community on campus have continued to grow.
